Why an independent label?
Since this interview, Shonda Sue has added four albums to her growing roster and launched her own independent label, a joint venture with her grandfather Paul Youkey. See SPirit Productions Studio article for details.

From 2002
As a rising star, yet to be discovered by major players in the music industry, Shonda Sue has faced a variety of obstacles in a career she began at age 8.
"One of the stereotypes I have faced," explains the 14-year-old recording artist from Indianapolis, "is that I am just some girl who sings at fairs and festivals.
"Yes, I do sing at a lot of fairs and festivals, beginning in the early spring and ending in late fall. That is where I choose to perform right now, because these places are appropriate for someone my age."
In addition to fairs and festivals, Shonda Sue performs at indoor venues like The Comfort Zone Coffeehouse in Plainfield and Borders Books and Music in Greenwood during the winter months. She also performs at weddings and is available for private or corporate events.
"I take my career very seriously. I have purchased my own sound equipment and trailer with money I earned at shows," Shonda Sue says.
Another major obstacle Shonda Sue has been battling is that of having no major label support.
"Since I was eight I have recorded three studio albums," she explains. "These are all on independent labels. My family has paid for the recording, the touring expenses - anything major relating to my career that I haven't paid for with my earnings."
The obvious question, then, is why invest the money in projects that have no financial backing or label support.

"We could sit around, bemoaning the fact that Shonda Sue doesn't have a major label deal. Or, we can do what we can to get her name and voice out there to potential fans."
